Demi Lovato Releases "I Love Me," About Combatting Struggles During Self Love (Review)

Demi Lovato premiered her new lead single for her upcoming era, I Love Me, on March 6. This marks Demi’s first official lead single since 2017 and her continued return to music since her overdose in 2018.

“I Love Me” is an upbeat pop song that focuses on the struggles of finding self love, as opposed to making self love seem like it’s something easy to accomplish. The lyrics talk about the hardships of continuous comparison with others, struggles with feeling guilty about eating, the self destructive inner voice, and so much more.

Don’t be fooled with the happy beat because this is not your typical pop song.

Okay after writing that sentence, it just reminded me of that scene from Mean Girls when they’re describing Regina George.

LMAO okay back to the review.

Despite the upbeat nature of the song, the lyrics really discuss a DEEPER meaning to the journey of self love and I don’t think that it got the recognition it deserves.

“Cause I'm a black belt when I'm beating up on myself

But I'm an expert at giving love to somebody else”

YOU TRYING TO TELL ME THIS ISN’T A LYRICAL MASTERPIECE?

I resonate with that lyric a lot and I’m sure a lot of you do too because sometimes, we just exert so much love on others, but we don’t ever return that to ourselves. I once read a quote that said something like “you deserve the love that you keep trying to give to everyone else” and I think that is SO important to note.

“And I always got my finger on the self-destruct

I wonder when I love me is enough”

This song isn’t even saying “you’re perfect, love yourself, your imperfections make you unique” or some backhanded cliche BS. This song opens up the topic about why are we always each other’s harshest critics? Why do we come at our own PEACE and SANITY? When is it gonna be enough to just love ME?

“Why am I always looking for a ride or die?
'Cause mine's the only heart I'm gonna have for life
All the times I went and f--ked it up (All the times I went and f--ked it up)”

YES. YES. YES.

It’s important to convey the message that at the end of the day, you need to put yourself first. And sometimes, it’s YOU picking yourself up despite all the times you messed everything up.

Also, let’s take a moment to appreciate Demi’s self awareness in this song. For her to once again, admit to her own issues and not blame it on others, is a big thing. It also shows how far she has come as an ex-addict since addicts have a hard time calling themselves out.

“Haters that live on the internet

Live in my head, should be paying rent”

ENDED STAN TWITTER.

“I'm my own worst critic
Talk a whole lot of s--t
But I'm a ten out of ten
Even when I forget”

This is the perfect way to close up the song because despite the hardships that our own mental health puts us through, it is important to remember who we truly are.

THIS IS HOW YOU RELEASE AN EMPOWERING SONG ABOUT SELF LOVE.

You have to admit to the bad to appreciate the good.

Rockemi looks so good

Rockemi looks so good

None of that “who says you’re not perfect” BS. This is real life. Self love is a journey full of bumps in the road. It’s full of imperfections. It’s full of criticizing and refusing any sort of acceptance. “I Love Me” paints self love in its sad, hard, and yet happy glory that is worth it in the end.

The Music Video

Some celebrities half ass things. Some release a great song, but a crappy video. Demi Lovato is not one of those celebrities.

We already talked about the serve that the lyrics gave us, but let’s talk about the video.

Not only does Demi look drop dead gorgeous, but throughout the video, she takes us on a path of all the big things that happened in her life.

I kind of want to make a post about all the hidden messages in the video… let me know if you want it.

The video opens up with her fighting her inner demon and yet her inner angel. It shows references that point back to Camp Rock, the Jonas Brothers, first coming to Hollywood with her mom and sister, her “Confident” era when she was practically at her lowest, her toxic ex getting engaged, and finally…… her overdose.

Demi is a real artist. She has the ability to make you feel emotions that you may not have experienced before, but for sure can resonate with.

I am so excited to see her navigate her way in this new era in her life, that’s all about being surrounded with love and walking in the light of the truth.

Speaking of which, whoever controls her Twitter account, liked our tweet talking about I Love Me!

WOOHOO.

Please, don’t drag Demi for this if you hate us. It’s probably a poor intern that doesn’t know anything. They just saw us rightfully praising “I Love Me,” and favorited the tweet.

Here’s the tweet.
